How would you change Nokia's Lumia 900?

Image

While this regular feature is called How Would You Change, in the case of Nokia's Lumia 900, it seems more apt to change the question to "What Killed It?." The flagship was designed to break the US from its traditional indifference to the company, yet only 600,000 users took the plunge. Firstly, despite its low price and smooth performance, it had mediocre specs and a middling display, while customers were outraged when the incompatible Windows Phone 8 and the Lumia 920 supplanted it half a year later. This week, we're asking you to play armchair Elop and tell us what you'd have done differently if they'd asked you.

Dan Hardy vs. Rory Markham is your knockout of the week

Dan Hardy usually fights well in his home country of England. For example, check out what he did to Rory Markham at UFC 95 in London.

On Saturday, he will fight Amir Sadollah in his hometown of Nottingham. He's gone 1-4 in his last five fights, but recaptured that knockout ability against Duane Ludwig in May. Will Hardy come up with another fine performance for the people of Nottingham? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Syria rebels struggle to advance in Aleppo offensive

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels said they were struggling to make headway against a barrage of government jet and artillery attacks in their latest attempt to take control of the country's largest city Aleppo after weeks of deadlock.

On the second day of an offensive they had billed as a "decisive battle", rebels also threatened to start fighting local Kurdish militants - a move which would further complicate a war that has already spilled over Syria's borders.

Fighters reached by telephone said they had been locked in hours of fierce combat in several neighborhoods of Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub, on Friday.

Rebels armed with machineguns and homemade rockets said they faced a difficult task against a better-equipped enemy.

"We reached the middle of Suleiman al-Halabi and liberated some neighborhoods so I am still optimistic. But I'm worried about our organization. We can't force the regime out. At best, I think we can advance some of our positions," one fighter said, requesting anonymity.

Other rebels told Reuters one of their units had been surrounded. One fighter said some insurgent battalions were pulling out of the front line or had never joined the battle.

The 18-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began as peaceful protests but has descended into a civil war. More than 30,000 people have been killed, say activists.

Syria's government says it is fighting Islamist hardliners, adding that thousands of Arab and foreign fighters have entered the country from Turkey.

MORE TALK, LITTLE ACTION AT U.N.

World powers have been meeting at the United Nations this week but are divided over the crisis.

Russia, China and Iran back Assad and oppose any UN sanctions on Syria's leader.

Western countries and Arab states supporting the opposition remain unwilling to take forceful action, despite Qatar's calls for Arab intervention. Some western diplomats say they have been frustrated by what they see as a lack of clear command structure and coordination among the rebels.

One group of countries sympathetic to Syria's opposition is planning to hold another "Friends of Syria" meeting, but there was little prospect of that resulting in action against Assad.

"I just expect ideas to be presented. There will be no concrete plans," Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby told Reuters at the conference in New York.

Diplomats on Friday said that Carla del Ponte, the International Criminal Court's former chief prosecutor, will be named to join a UN investigation into abuses in Syria. Del Ponte was known for doggedly pursuing former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic at the ICC. [ID:nL5E8KS58C]

Human rights investigators say state forces and some rebel groups have committed war crimes in Syria.

Inside Syria, neither side seems ready to put down its arms. Assad's forces have pounded rebel-held areas across the country, and clashes erupt daily. Yet both sides appear incapable of striking a decisive military blow.

A main international concern has been the security of Syria's chemical weapons sites. But U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta cited U.S. intelligence on Friday suggesting that the chemicals remained secure.

The rebels appear to be improving their reach. A bomb attack on Wednesday wrecked the army's command headquarters in the heart of Damascus, though no major officers were killed.

FIGHTING THE KURDS

The rebels also threatened to confront locally-based Kurdish militant groups who they said they suspected of supporting Assad.

They said the groups were linked to Kurdish Worker's Party (PKK) which has been fighting for autonomy in neighboring Turkey.

One rebel leader issued a warning to the Kurds through the Facebook page for the Tawheed Brigade, the largest rebel unit in Aleppo.

"Tawheed Brigade leader Abdelqadir al-Saleh made a final request by phone to the PKK gangs, to drop their weapons immediately and not drag themselves into a losing battle that is not their fight," it said.

"Whoever carries arms in the face of the opposition battalions will find themselves under fire."

In Aleppo's Kurdish neighborhood of Sheikh Maqsoud, rebels said they had captured at least eight men from the shabbiha - as the pro-Assad militias are known. Some of the captives were killed, they said.

It was unclear if the victims were Kurds, a stateless ethnic group who stretch over much of the region and have so far been split over their support for the uprising.

RIM posts big loss but not as bad as expected

FILE-In this Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, file photo, Thorsten Heins, President and CEO of Research in Motion, speaks during a demonstration of the new BlackBerry 10 at the BlackBerry Jam Americas conference in San Jose, Calif. BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion posted another large loss in the second quarter but not as bad as analysts expected. Shares surged nearly 18 percent in after-hours trading. The Canadian company reported Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, that it lost $235 million, or 45 cents a share, in its fiscal second quarter, which ended Sept 1. (AP) ? BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion posted another large quarterly loss on Thursday, but the hemorrhaging was not as bad expected.

The Canadian company is still losing market share in North America, where it struggles to compete with Apple's iPhone and phones that run Google's Android software. But it has stepped up sales in developing markets and actually increased its subscriber base and cash position.

RIM's stock surged more than 20 percent in after-market trading on the news.

The company reported Thursday that it lost $235 million, or 45 cents a share, in its fiscal second quarter, which ended Sept 1. That compares with a profit of $419 million, or 80 cents per share, a year ago.

RIM reported revenue of $2.9 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected a loss of 47 cents on revenue of $2.49 billion.

RIM said it shipped 7.4 million BlackBerry smartphones in the quarter, down from 10.6 million in the same period last year. Some analysts predicted RIM would ship only 6.4 million devices as the company prepares to launch much-delayed new BlackBerrys that have been deemed critical to its survival.

RIM pioneered the smartphone in 1999 but North American consumers have been abandoning BlackBerrys for flashier, touchscreen phones in recent years. RIM is banking its future on its much-delayed BlackBerry 10 platform, which is meant to offer the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience that users now demand.

Chief Executive Thorsten Heins said on a conference call with analysts that BlackBerry 10 is still on track to be released in the first quarter of 2013 ? several months after the release of Apple's iPhone 5, which came out earlier this month. Heins said competitors have released strong products recently but vowed BlackBerry 10 "will advance the operating system environment to a whole new level."

Heins replaced co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis in January after the company lost tens of billions in market value. He surprised many this week when he said at a conference for mobile applications developers that RIM has 80 million subscribers, up from 78 million in early June. Many analysts had expected RIM to start losing subscribers in the second quarter.

The results show that RIM is making progress as it transitions to its next generation of BlackBerry smartphones and completes its cost reduction plan, Heins said.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said RIM did a great job in the quarter, considering the challenges it faced. He noted, however, that doesn't account for much because its new smartphones are not out yet.

"They are driving sales in emerging markets and we think they will continue to lose subscribers in developed markets," Misek said. "It doesn't tell you anything about the long-term success of the platform or the company."

RIM's sales outside the United States, United Kingdom and Canada were about 58 percent of total revenue, said Brian Bidulka, the company's chief financial officer. He noted sales were strong in Indonesia, South Africa and Venezuela, but declined in the U.S.

Sales in the U.S. represented 22 percent of revenue, down from 25 percent in the first quarter and 27 percent in the second quarter last year. Bidulka said RIM's business will continue to be challenged until the new BlackBerrys are launched.

Research firm IDC says BlackBerry's U.S. market share has plummeted from 45.8 percent in 2008 to 2.7 percent in 2012.

RIM has been laying off thousands of workers to offset the losses.

Heins noted RIM's cash position stood at $2.3 billion at Sept. 1, up from $2.2 billion at the end of the previous quarter. The company is very focused on maintaining a strong financial position as it transitions to the new platform, he said.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, said RIM's ability to grow the subscriber base while not hurting its cash position is encouraging.

"It does give them more time. The talk of bankruptcy has probably dissipated right now," Gillis said. "These are all the right moves, but does it change that their position is still bleak?"

RIM's stock rose $1.46 cents to $8.60 in extended U.S. trading Thursday. It had ended the regular trading session up 14 cents at $7.14. RIM's struggles have wiped out some $80 billion in shareholder wealth since 2008, a drop of over 90 percent.

Build Your Own Arduino Powered Automatic Blinds [DIY]

Build Your Own Arduino Powered Automatic BlindsOne of the easiest tricks to keeping a house warm (or cool), is to open and close the blinds in time with the sun. Of course, that's only helpful if you're home all the time to do that. Instructables user FreedomToCreate has made an Arduino powered system that opens and closes the blinds on a schedule, based on room temperature, or outdoor light.

The most expensive parts of the project are an Arduino and an Ethernet shield, but everything else is pretty cheap. It's a bit of a complicated set up, but FreedomToCreate's guide has everything you'll need, as well as the code to put on the Arduino. You'll need to tinker a bit to get it to work with your own blinds. As a cheap, automated system to keep your home's temperature right, it's an interesting project.

California man behind anti-Muslim film ordered jailed

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The surrounding mystery of the man behind the crudely produced anti-Islamic video that sparked violence in the Middle East took a strange turn after he appeared in court and gave yet another name in a string of aliases.

Arrested on Thursday after authorities said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula told a judge his real name was Mark Basseley Youseff. He said he'd been using that name since 2002, even though he went by Nakoula in his fraud case.

The full story about Nakoula and the video "Innocence of Muslims" still isn't known more than two weeks after violence erupted in Egypt and Libya, where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others were killed in Benghazi. Violence related to the film has since spread, killing dozens more.

Citing a lengthy pattern of deception and the potential to flee, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ordered Nakoula to remain in prison without bond until another judge can hold a hearing to determine if he broke the terms of his probation.

"The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time," Segal said.

Prosecutors noted Nakoula had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases. He could face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term.

After his 2010 conviction, Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, though prosecutors said none of the violations involved the Internet. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer.

Three names, however, have been associated with Nakoula this month alone.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile spoke to media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Some of the false statements in Nakoula's alleged probation violations had to do with the film, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said. Nakoula told probation officials his role was just writing the script, and denied going by the name Sam Bacile in connection with the film, Dugdale said.

Before going into hiding, Nakoula acknowledged to the AP that he was involved with the film, but said he only worked on logistics and management.

Nakoula, a Christian originally from Egypt, then went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. He met with federal probation officials two weeks ago, led out of his home in suburban Cerritos in the middle of the night, flanked by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and cloaked in heavy clothing to protect his identity.

The public got their first good look at Nakoula on Thursday, although the news media was banned from the courtroom and reporters had to watch the proceedings on a TV in a nearby courthouse.

Nakoula wore beige pants and a collared shirt when he was led into the courtroom handcuffed and shackled. He appeared relaxed, smiling at one point before the hearing and conferring with his attorney.

Nakoula's attorney Steven Seiden sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Nakoula has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.

Seiden was concerned that Nakoula would be in danger in federal prison because of Muslim inmates, but prosecutors said he likely would be placed in protective custody.

Lawrence Rosenthal, a constitutional and criminal law professor at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, said it was "highly unusual" for a judge to order immediate detention on a probation violation for a nonviolent crime, but if there were questions about Nakoula's identity it was more likely.

"When the prosecution doesn't really know who they're dealing with, it's much easier to talk about flight," Rosenthal said. "I've prosecuted individuals who'd never given a real address. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you're just going to have very limited confidence about their ability to show up in court."

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.

First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film while condemning its content. And federal officials likely will face criticism from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled by his arrest on a probation violation.

In arguing that Nakoula is a possible flight risk, Dugdale said Nakoula couldn't even reveal something as fundamental as his real name.

"He's a person who simply can't be trusted," he said.

Planned Parenthood Announces First-Ever Clinton Global Initiative ...

Launches Global Program to Train Young People in Africa and Latin America as Community Health Providers, Global Fellowships for Young Health Care Advocates in U.S.

New York, NY --(ENEWSPF)--September 25, 2012. ?At this year?s Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting, Planned Parenthood Federation of America announced the launch of a global program designed to help address the inequities young people around the world face when it comes to reproductive health care.?The program will train young people in Africa and Latin America to provide basic contraceptive counseling and consistent contraceptive access to their friends, classmates and peers.?

?Planned Parenthood is deeply committed to fighting for the healthiest generation ever.?That?s why we are thrilled to take part in the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting for the first time,? said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.??We know that young people across the globe remain extremely vulnerable to unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, and HIV/AIDS, but are so often unable to access quality health care.?Planned Parenthood?s commitment today seeks to improve young people?s health and lives, no matter where they live.?

Today?s Commitment to Action also builds on Planned Parenthood?s success in mobilizing a national network of young advocates in the U.S.

?Through two new global health fellowships and new regional training institutes for young advocates in the U.S., Planned Parenthood continues to forge connections between young leaders across regions,? said Latanya Mapp Frett, PPFA's vice president ? global.??Young people in the U.S. see themselves as connected to the world beyond our borders.?High-speed Internet, mobile technology, the 24-hour news cycle, and immigration all contribute to this new global identity.?

Planned Parenthood Federation of America?s CGI Commitment to Action goes a significant step further than most peer education and community health programs, building on the extremely successful Youth Peer Provider model developed and piloted by Planned Parenthood Global, Planned Parenthood Federation of America?s international arm, and partner organizations in Africa and Latin America.

Planned Parenthood recognizes that in rural areas and urban slums information doesn?t mean much without access.?The Youth Peer Provider model seeks to address these issues, helping young people provide information and consistent access to modern pregnancy and STD prevention methods, including contraceptive pills and condoms, all available without prescriptions in the countries where the model is implemented.

?Planned Parenthood Global?s Youth Peer Provider model has already made a significant impact in the lives of young people, helping them to avoid unintended pregnancy and disease and lead healthier, more productive lives,? said Frett.??We are so excited to be making this commitment with the Clinton Global Initiative today to expand the work we are doing.?

As part of Planned Parenthood?s CGI Commitment to Action, over the next two years Planned Parenthood Global will

  • support six new partners in Africa and three new partners in Latin America to launch Youth Peer Provider models;
  • nominate and sponsor global youth advocacy fellows in the United States to attend U.N. and other international meetings and design global health campaigns in their home communities; and global youth ambassadors to travel to and work with Planned Parenthood Global?s country programs;
  • host sub-regional youth organizing training institutes across the U.S. and one national youth organizing conference to reach 1,500 young Americans with communications and advocacy skills;
  • train at least four local or international colleague institutions in model implementation and print and disseminate a trainers manual to enable other organizations working with young people to implement the model, and translate this manual in Spanish; and?
  • conduct digital outreach to bring real-time global health policy information to young people across the U.S. through Planned Parenthood websites and social media platforms, which receive more than four million visits each month.

In addition to its domestic work, Planned Parenthood works overseas to ensure that women, men and young people in some of the world?s most neglected areas have access to the health care they need to control their bodies and their futures.?Planned Parenthood Global, the organization?s international division, partners with local advocates, medical service providers and youth leaders in 10 countries to build sustainable networks and fight for more inclusive laws and policies.?As part of this work, Planned Parenthood Global helps partners working on HIV prevention and treatment to incorporate family planning into their programs.

Cities where home prices not rebounding

Kevork Djansezian / Getty Images file

Home prices have been slow to rebound in many recession-battered U.S. cities.

By Michael B. Sauter and Alexander E. M. Hess, 24/7 Wall St.

?Since home prices peaked in the beginning of 2006, the U.S. median home price is down by a third. And though the market has begun to show signs of bottoming out, prices are still down nationally by 1.9 percent from last year and are expected to fall an additional 1 percent from the beginning of this year through 2013.

24/7 Wall St.: The 10 states with the strongest housing markets

Of the 384 largest housing markets measured by real estate data company?Fiserv, 69 have seen home prices fall more than the national average. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the markets with the worst home price declines from their pre-recession?peak. Of those metro areas, we identified the markets where the median?price did not improve in any of the periods measured by Fiserv as of the first quarter of 2012. The?10 worst are housing markets that have fallen at least 55 percent and have yet to recover.

While the drop in home prices in these markets has slowed, the local economies have been devastated. July unemployment rates in the worst housing markets were all above the national rate of 8.1 percent. Eight of the 10 have rates of at least 10 percent, and five are above 12 percent. Merced, Calif., one of the?10 worst-off cities, had an unemployment rate of 17.8 percent in July, the fourth-highest in the country.

According Fiserv chief economist David Stiff, the unemployment rates and languishing home prices in these markets are indicative of the underlying problems in these states as a whole. ?The reason the job markets are so weak in these metro areas is that during the boom more than half of the growth was generated either directly or indirectly by residential real estate, and so now the reverse has happened,? Stiff explained.?

Further evidence of the economic troubles heaped on these cities, three of the housing markets ? San Bernardino, Vallejo and Stockton ? have filed for bankruptcy since the recession began. Stockton?s Chapter 9 filing represents the largest such case in U.S. history.

Continually depressed home prices also have led to unusually high foreclosure rates in these markets. According to foreclosure data from RealtyTrac, a site that tracks housing data, these cities had among the worst foreclosure rates in the country as of the second quarter of 2012. Of the 10 cities, eight are among the 20 with the highest foreclosure rates out of the 212 metro regions with populations of 200,000 or more.

Of the cities with the worst home price declines, some have begun to recover. In the Detroit metro area, which did not make the list, the median home price has declined by 55.8 percent from the first quarter of 2006. However, between the first quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012, the median price went up by 8.6 percent, one of the largest increases in the country.

Like Detroit, many of the the 10 worst-off markets appear to be about to recover because buyers see bargains. Home prices in seven of the 10 metro areas were lower than the national median of $159,000. Fiserv projects that of the 10 housing markets on our list, five will increase by more than the national rate of 5 percent between the first quarter of 2013 and the first quarter of 2014. This includes the Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach region, which Fiserv projects will have more than 10 percent growth in median home value in that time. Stiff confirmed this: ?Investors, who were part of the problem back in the boom years, will be trying to jump into these markets at a low.?

24/7 Wall St.: Cities with the most homes in foreclosure

24/7 Wall St. reviewed data from Fiserv?to determine the 10 metropolitan areas that had no annual improvement in their housing markets from the first quarter of 2007, the first quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2011, all through the first quarter of 2012. We relied on RealtyTrac for data on foreclosure rates and foreclosure sales (both for second quarter of 2012). We also obtained seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for July from the Bureau of Labor Statistics

These are the?10 towns that cannot turn around.

1. Merced,?Calif.

  • ?Decline in home prices (peak to Q1, 2012):?-69.7 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate:?17.8 percent (fourth highest)
  • ?Median home price:?$110,000 (32nd lowest)
  • ?Foreclosure rate:?One in 90.3 housing units (eighth highest)

Nowhere in the U.S. have home prices taken the beating they have in Merced where the median price of a home has fallen at an annualized rate of 19.2 percent in the past five years. That's?the highest rate in the country. Sadly, prices are not expected to begin to rise in 2012, as Fiserv predicts home prices will fall another 4.4 percent between the first quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of?2013. Though home prices were possibly overvalued at their peak, when the median mortgage payment cost 51 percent of monthly income, they would appear to be undervalued now; the median mortgage payment costs just 10 percent of monthly income. The decline in home value has been especially costly for some homeowners, as one in every 90.3 homes was in foreclosure, and 55 percent of all home sales were foreclosure sales. The massive decline in home prices has also caused significant damage to the local economy ? the unemployment rate in Merced was 17.8 percent, higher than almost all other metropolitan areas.

2. Modesto, Calif.

  • ?Decline in home prices (peak to Q1, 2012):?-64 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate:?15.7 percent (ninth highest)
  • ?Median home price:?$139,000 (83rd lowest)
  • ?Foreclosure rate:?One in 68.7 housing units (third highest)

Over the past five years Modesto?s median home price has fallen from 7.5 times median family income to just 2.5 times median family income. Though homes in the area have become more affordable, such price declines have devastated present and current homeowners. The area had the third-highest foreclosure rate in the nation at slightly higher than one in every 69 homes, and 57 percent of all homes sold were foreclosed properties. In few places has the economy been weakened by a housing collapse more than in Modesto, where the unemployment rate stood at 15.7 percent, the ninth highest rate nationwide.

24/7 Wall St.: States Losing the Most Jobs to China

3. Stockton,?Calif.

  • ?Decline in home prices (peak to Q1, 2012):?-62.8 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate:?15.0 percent (12th highest)
  • ?Median home price:?$170,000 (76th highest)
  • ?Foreclosure rate:?1 in 66.2 housing units (the highest)

When Stockton filed for bankruptcy in June, it became the largest-ever U.S. city to do so, according to The Wall Street Journal. The city?s economy has been plagued for years by constantly falling?home prices, which declined at an annualized rate of 16.6 percent between the first quarter of 2007 and the first quarter of 2012. Stockton also has one of the nation?s highest unemployment rates of 15 percent and a foreclosure rate that leads the nation with one in every 66.2 homes in foreclosure. Though Fiserv projects home prices will rise at an annualized rate of nearly 6 percent between the first quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2017, the housing market remains weak.?Fifty-four percent of all second-quarter home sales were foreclosure sales, and the number of property listings in July was down more than 40 percent year-over-year.

4. Las Vegas-Paradise,?Nev.

  • ?Decline in home prices (peak to Q1, 2012):?-61.6 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate:?11.7 percent (32nd highest)
  • ?Median home price:?$137,000 (79th lowest)
  • ?Foreclosure rate:?One in 95.9 housing units (11th highest)

No metropolitan area outside California has seen as large and unabated decline in home prices as Las Vegas. While home prices in other metro areas on this list are expected to improve in the near future, home prices in Las Vegas are projected by Fiserv to decline through at least the first quarter of 2014. Home prices in the area are already low enough that the average discount for purchasing a foreclosed home was just 15.2 percent, less than half the 31.7 percent average discount nationwide.

5. Vallejo-Fairfield,?Calif.

  • ?Decline in home prices (peak to Q1, 2012):?-60.1 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate:?10.2 percent (56th highest)
  • ?Median home price:?$200,000 (47th highest)
  • ?Foreclosure rate:?One in 71.4 housing units (fourth highest)

The Vallejo-Fairfield, Calif., metro area home price drop of more than 60 percent since the first quarter of 2006 was the sixth-worst decline during the housing market collapse of the 384 regions measured by Fiserv. Despite the decline, the area?s median home price was still in the top 15 percent, largely because the area contains California?s famous wine region, the Napa Valley. Median family income was among the top 40 in the country at $76,100. Despite this, one in every 71.4 homes was in foreclosure as of the second quarter of this year, the fourth-highest rate in the country.

Actively engaging viewers is key to online success | Streaming ...

From left: Joe Ruffolo, senior vice president of Digital Media at ABC News; Andrew Heyward, the former president of CBS News; Ray Mia, CEO of Streamworks International; and Roy Sekoff, president, HuffPost Live and a founding editor of the Huffington Post.

In this era of thousands of video news clips available whenever you want them and countless more being uploaded every day, in order to attract an online audience and monetize that video, it?s not enough for TV station websites to host content that mimics its main linear television channel. In fact, according to a high-powered panel of current and former news professionals and new media experts well versed in all things online, it?s how you ?purpose? that video from the outset ? across multiple platforms ? and what happens to it virally after it has been posted that really counts with online marketers.

Sponsored by Streamworks International, a live streaming services provider based in the UK, a recent discussion entitled ?The New Live News Paradigm: Anywhere, Any Device? sought to answer some tough questions about the value of online video and how best to engage the online audience during major news events.

The event gathered Joe Ruffolo, senior vice president of Digital Media at ABC News; Roy Sekoff, president, HuffPost Live and a founding editor of the Huffington Post; and Andrew Heyward, the former president of CBS News (who held the position longer than anyone at the network) and now an advisor to media companies.

Their winning strategy: If you build an audience for that video, using social media tools and interactive web environments to actively ?engage? them and keep them coming back, then you can begin to perhaps charge a subscription for a video service. Until they clearly understand how to do this, however, local broadcasters, with a lot less money to spend than their network and other deep-pocket competitors, will continue to mistakenly present an experience similar to traditional linear TV. This, said the panelists, is a recipe for eventual online disaster because attention spans among consumers are getting shorter, and creativity is often more compelling than real substance.

?Everyone?s producing video now, so what are you doing beyond that to engage the audience with that video?,? Heyward asked, adding that a fundamental shift in control has occurred, moving from the content producer to the content consumer. He said?the average consumer, not the TV executive, now decides whether a video message has been delivered correctly or not.

Streamworks delivers audio and video over any network to any device, anywhere in the world using bandwidth from companies like Level 3 Communications. Level 3?s IP-based fiber network is also being used to deliver live, uncut video news feeds to news organizations like Associated Press Television News, which in turn repackages it for broadcasters around the world (or allows regional broadcasters to do it themselves). The company said its fully managed service for delivering live and on-demand video saves, on average,?more than 30 percent?bandwidth over traditional satellite ? using specialized H.264 encoding and other date rate scaling techniques.

Ray Mia, the CEO of Streamworks ? who also participated in the panel discussion at the British Embassy in New York City ? said while everyone agrees that content is King, ?Distribution is King Kong.?

?You?ve got to get that news video into the right hands, at the right time, or it loses value quickly,? Mia said. ?There?s a time for on-demand viewing, but a live stream is the most compelling way to deliver the news. The technology now being deployed is making this easier and easier.?

At ABC News, Ruffolo said they've seen the biggest jump in video consumption across its mobile platforms, particularly during coverage of the recent political party conventions. This significant upswing in on-the-go usage, according to Ruffolo, is exactly why the old way of delivering news does not work for viewers anymore. Consumers rarely watch the network?s flagship news program ?World News Tonight? when it airs at 6:30 Eastern in the evening. They record it for later viewing. Or they watch a small portion on TV in real time, and then watch the rest later online.

?We now look at ABC News?s Digital Media division as supporting three streams simultaneously: TV, the Internet and Mobile,? Ruffolo said. ?All three share some common content, but how they each deliver it is vastly different.?

?You also have to be careful how you use text,? he added, ?as it can get in the way of the video viewing experience. I?m not saying that text is not important. Good journalism always gets people?s attention, but for the casual viewer, they want to see the video first and foremost. An exclusive video [or a uniquely edited clip from someone else?s video] gets people engaged, so you want that video front and center on any website and easily accessible across all mobile platforms.?

In discussing his company?s efforts behind HuffPost Live, a new in-house produced streaming video network that provides 12 hours of live video per day, Sekoff said they?ve hired 100 people, originating from all aspects of the online world (including former CNN, MSNBC and The Onion employees) to staff the new venture.

HuffPost Livetakes advantage of The Huffington Post's (owned by AOL) expanding online community and social platforms to ?engage viewers? around the world ? who can also join in live via webcam. The network launched in August with?10 hosts ? eight hours of live programming out of New York and four hours out of Los Angeles each weekday. Highlights are posted online overnight and on weekends.

?There?s a whole new generation of talented, young digital media professionals that get the idea that this new online experience is a two-way dialogue,? Sekoff said. ?We, as media companies, are no longer just talking at people. We are listening to what they have to say and responding to it as quickly as we can. When we?re successful, consumers, in turn, are responding back. That?s what we mean by ?engaging the audience.? If they don?t respond back, they are not engaged, and you, as a media company, have to figure that out if you want advertisers to support your content service.?

Sekoff joked that HuffPost Live and the industry in general is in the ?zygote? stage when it comes to understanding what type of content online viewers want to watch and how best to engage them to get the most value for advertisers and online marketers.

Rangers rally past A's 5-4 for 5-game AL West lead

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Adrian Beltre singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and the Texas Rangers rallied past Oakland 5-4 on Monday night to stretch their AL West lead over the Athletics to five games with nine to play.

Beltre, whose 35th homer tied the score in the seventh, grounded a sharp single through the middle of the infield off Tyson Ross (2-11) in the ninth, bringing home pinch-runner Craig Gentry.

The Rangers got the inning started with consecutive singles by Mitch Moreland and Ian Kinsler before Elvis Andrus' sacrifice bunt. Josh Hamilton, who had already hit his major league-best 43rd homer after missing the previous five games with a cornea issue, was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Oakland has lost six of seven.

'Moon River' crooner Andy Williams dies at age 84

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? With a string of gold albums, a hit TV series and the signature "Moon River," Andy Williams was a voice of the 1960s, although not the '60s we usually hear about.

"The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there," the singer once recalled. "Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred ? not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself."

Williams' plaintive tenor, boyish features and wholesome, middle-America appeal helped him outlast many of the rock stars who had displaced him and such fellow crooners as Frank Sinatra and Perry Como. He remained on the charts into the 1970s, hosting hugely popular Christmas TV specials, and continued to perform in his 80s at the Moon River Theatre he built in Branson, Mo.

In November 2011, when Williams announced that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer, he vowed to return to performing the following year: His 75th in show business.

Williams died Tuesday night at his home in Branson following a yearlong battle with the disease, his Los Angeles-based publicist, Paul Shefrin, said Wednesday. He was 84.

He became a major star the same year as Elvis Presley, 1956, with the Sinatra-like swing "Canadian Sunset," and for a time he was pushed into such Presley imitations as "Lips of Wine" and the No. 1 smash "Butterfly."

But he mostly stuck to what he called his "natural style," and kept it up throughout his career. In 1970, when even Sinatra had given up and (temporarily) retired, Williams was in the top 10 with the theme from "Love Story," the Oscar-winning tearjerker. He had 18 gold records and three platinum, was nominated for five Grammy awards and hosted the Grammy ceremonies for several years.

Movie songs became a specialty, from "Love Story" and "Days of Wine and Roses" to "Moon River." The longing Johnny Mercer-Henry Mancini ballad was his most famous song, even though he never released it as a single because his record company feared such lines as "my huckleberry friend" were too confusing and old-fashioned for teens.

The song was first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the beloved 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," but Mancini thought "Moon River" ideal for Williams, who recorded it in "pretty much one take" and also sang it at the 1962 Academy Awards. Although "Moon River" was covered by countless artists and became a hit single for Jerry Butler, Williams made the song his personal brand. In fact, he insisted on it.

"When I hear anybody else sing it, it's all I can to do stop myself from shouting at the television screen, 'No! That's my song!'" Williams wrote in his 2009 memoir, titled, fittingly, "Moon River and Me."

"The Andy Williams Show," which lasted in various formats through the 1960s and into 1971, won three Emmys and featured Williams alternately performing his stable of hits and bantering casually with his guest stars.

It was on that show that Williams ? who launched his own career as part of an all-brother quartet ? introduced the world to another clean-cut act ? the original four singing Osmond Brothers of Utah. Their younger sibling Donny also made his debut on Williams' show, in 1963 when he was 6 years old. Four decades later, the Osmonds and Williams would find themselves in close proximity again, sharing Williams' theater in Branson.

Williams did book some rock and soul acts, including the Beach Boys, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson. On one show, in 1970, Williams sang "Heaven Help Us All" with Ray Charles, Mama Cass and a then-little known Elton John, a vision to Williams in his rhinestone glasses and black cape. But Williams liked him and his breakthrough hit "Your Song" enough to record it himself.

Williams' act was, apparently, not an act. The singer's unflappable manner on television and in concert was mirrored offstage.

"I guess I've never really been aggressive, although almost everybody else in show business fights and gouges and knees to get where they want to be," he once said. "My trouble is, I'm not constructed temperamentally along those lines

His wholesome image endured one jarring interlude. In 1976, his ex-wife, former Las Vegas showgirl Claudine Longet, shot and killed her lover, skiing champion Spider Sabich. The Rolling Stones mocked the tragedy in "Claudine," a song so pitiless that it wasn't released until decades later. Longet, who said it was an accident, spent only a week in jail. Williams stood by her. He escorted her to the courthouse, testified on her behalf and provided support for her and their children, Noelle, Christian and Robert.

Also in the 1970s, Williams was seen frequently in the company of Ethel Kennedy, Robert Kennedy's widow. The singer denied any romantic involvement.

He was born Howard Andrew Williams in Wall Lake, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1927. In his memoir, Williams remembered himself as a shy boy who concealed his insecurity "behind a veneer of cheek and self-confidence." Of Wall Lake, Williams joked that it was so small, and had so little to do, that crowds would gather just to watch someone get a haircut.

Williams began performing with his older brothers Dick, Bob and Don in the local Presbyterian church choir. Their father, postal worker and insurance man Jay Emerson Williams, was the choirmaster and the force behind his children's career.

When Andy was 8, Williams' father brought the kids for an audition on Des Moines radio station WHO's Iowa Barn Dance. They were initially turned down, but Jay Emerson Williams and the young quartet kept returning and they were finally accepted, their show bringing them attention from Chicago, Cincinnati and Hollywood. Another star at WHO was a young sportscaster named Ronald Reagan, who would later praise Williams as a "national treasure."

The brothers joined Bing Crosby in recording the hit "Swinging on a Star" in 1944 for Crosby's film "Going My Way," and Andy, barely a teenager, was picked to dub Lauren Bacall's voice on a song for the film "To Have and Have Not." His voice stayed in the film until the preview, when it was cut because it didn't sound like Bacall's.

Later the brothers worked with Kay Thompson of eventual "Eloise" fame, then a singer who had taken a position as vocal coach at MGM studios, working with Judy Garland, June Allyson and others. After three months of training, Thompson and the Williams Brothers broke in their show at the El Rancho Room in Las Vegas to a huge ovation. They drew rave reviews in New York, Los Angeles and across the nation, earning a peak of $25,000 a week.

Williams, analyzing their success, once said: "Somehow we managed to work up and sustain an almost unbearable pitch of speed and rhythm."

After five years, the three older brothers, who were starting their own families, had tired of the constant travel and left to pursue other careers.

Williams initially struggled as a solo act and was so broke at one point that he resorted to eating food intended for his two dogs.

"I had no money for food, so I ate it," he recalled in 2001, "and it actually was damned good."

A two-year TV stint on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show" and a contract with Cadence Records turned things around. Williams later formed his own label, Barnaby Records, which released music by the Everly Brothers, Ray Stevens and Jimmy Buffett.

Williams was a lifelong Republican who once accused President Obama of "following Marxist theory." But he acknowledged experimenting with LSD, opposed the Nixon administration's efforts in the 1970s to deport John Lennon, and, in 1968, was an energetic supporter of Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign. When Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles in June 1968, just after winning the California Democratic primary, Williams sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" at his funeral.

"We chose that song because he used it on the campaign trail," Williams later said of Kennedy, who had been a close friend. "He had a terrible voice but he loved to sing that song. The only way I got through singing in church that day was by saying, 'This is my job. I can't let emotion get in the way of the song.' I really concentrated on not thinking about him."

After leaving TV, Williams headed back on the road, where his many Christmas shows and albums made him a huge draw during the holidays. One year in Des Moines, however, a snowstorm kept the customers away, and the band's equipment failed to reach Chicago in time for the next night's show, forcing the musicians to borrow instruments from a high school band.

"No more tours," Williams decreed.

He decided to settle in Branson, the self-proclaimed "live entertainment capital of the country," with its dozens of theaters featuring live music, comedy and magic acts.

When he arrived in 1992, the town was dominated by country music performers, but Williams changed that, building the classy, $13 million Andy Williams Moon River Theater in the heart of the city's entertainment district and performing two shows a night, six days a week, nine months of the year. Only in recent years did he begin to cut back to one show a night.

Not surprisingly, his most popular time of the year was Christmas, although he acknowledged that not everyone in Hollywood accepted his move to the Midwest.

"The fact is most of my friends in L.A. still think I'm nuts for coming here," he told The Associated Press in 1998.

He and his second wife, the former Debbie Haas, divided their time between homes in Branson and Palm Springs, where he spent his leisure hours on the golf course when Branson's theaters were dark during the winter months following Christmas.

Retirement was not on his schedule. As he told the AP in 2001: "I'll keep going until I get to the point where I can't get out on stage."

Williams is survived by his wife, Debbie, and his three children, Robert, Noelle and Christian.

Barnes & Noble's Nook HD 7-inch Android tablet, hands-on (video)

Image

It was roughly this time last year that Amazon's Kindle Fire showed us just how successful an aggressively priced 7-inch tablet could be, becoming, arguably the go-to gift of the last holiday season. This summer, Google upped the ante, showing the world that a $200 tablet could be more than just an OEM-ed content delivery device, enlisting ASUS to design a really solid piece of hardware at a seemingly impossible price.

Barnes & Noble's journey in the space, meanwhile, has been decidedly more convoluted. In mid-October of 2010, the company gave the world the Nook Color -- a product with a wildly original industrial design, but decidedly limited functionality, which was, for most intents and purposes, an LCD-based color e-reader. Halfway through the following year, the device got a Pinocchio-like upgrade, transforming it into an honest-to-goodness tablet, apps and all. The device's celebration was cut short, however, eclipsed entirely by the arrival of the aesthetically (nearly) identical, but internally superior Nook Tablet.

When Amazon announced the release of the Kindle Fire HD and all of its many variants, there was little question that Barnes & Noble had something waiting in the wings as well. After all, much of the bookseller's hardware game plan seems to revolve around going toe-to-toe against Amazon offerings, and since the company beat its chief competition to the market with a glowing reader, a Nook Tablet seemed all but inevitable. With this week's announcements, however, the company has managed to offer up some surprises -- for starters, there's the fact that it's doubled its efforts with the release of two tablets -- with the 7-inch Nook HD and the 9-inch Nook HD+. Then there's the fact that the company has clearly put great effort into the hardware this go-round, rather than offering up yet another rehash of the Color / Tablet lineage. Let's start with the Nook HD, shall we? Join us after the break.

The new product introduces Lingvo cards, an interactive tool for memorizing words and phrases while on the go. Its close integration with the extensive dictionary content of ABBYY Lingvo(R) helps iPhone(R) and iPad(R) users learn languages more effectively enjoying the process.

"Over 70 percent users of ABBYY Lingvo use the dictionary for learning foreign languages, and many of them were asking us to create a tool to help them memorize words and phrases" commented Katya Solntseva, Director of Mobile Products Department at ABBYY. "New Lingvo cards makes a very natural addition to the dictionary, simplifying their task. It also provides people with the opportunity to master a language by taking advantage of any idle moment while on the go."

Lingvo cards enables users to create easy-to-use learning cards for memorizing words and checking themselves periodically with simple lessons at any place and time. The lessons offer two most basic and popular tasks: to refresh or remember translations of foreign words (by reading or listening to their audio pronunciation) and remember a word by its translations displayed on the screen. Learning cards can be created automatically from dictionary entries or manually by typing or copying necessary information from other sources. They can be grouped for different languages and translation directions allowing users to learn more than one language on their device. Users can easily manage their cards according to their individual plan: add new cards with additional information and translation alternatives, exclude words from the lessons or delete them from the program when they are memorized. In addition to several translation alternatives, Lingvo сards may contain audio pronunciations of words, usage examples and any other information a user may find important.

Unlike traditional paper cards for memorizing words, Lingvo cards will never get lost or missed, they won't pile up in multiple places overwhelming language learners with their quantity. Salisbury News: Maryland Chooses To Innovate For A Brighter Future

Recently the U.S. Chamber of Commerce ranked Maryland No. 1 in the nation for innovation and entrepreneurship. A champion of pro-business policies, the chamber lauded Maryland for its commitments to education, start-up companies and collaboration between business and academia.

The recipe for Maryland?s appeal is simple ? we reward innovation, invest in our skilled workforce and encourage entrepreneurship through state programs and public-private partnerships. With world-class research labs, brilliant entrepreneurs and highly educated workers, Maryland is uniquely ready to take advantage of a fast-changing global economy in which sectors such as biotechnology, cybersecurity and high-tech manufacturing are keys to good jobs and bright futures.

InvestMaryland and InnovateMaryland, both created in the past 18 months, have $84 million to make venture capital investments in high-tech Maryland start-ups and $5.8 million to commercialize promising technologies from state universities. With input from the business community and Maryland residents, we have also made doing business easier by repealing or revising more than 130 outdated state regulations and streamlining state processes.

Maryland had the nation?s highest median household income in 2010, according to the Census Bureau. Marylanders also have the third-lowest state and local tax burden as a share of their incomes, according to Federal Funds Information for States.

The number of millionaires calling the Free State home has increased almost 20 percent since 2007, and by last year Maryland had the greatest concentration of millionaire households in the country, according to Phoenix Marketing International. The latest year of data available from Maryland?s Comptroller (2010) shows a 16 percent increase in the number of millionaire tax filers, following the dip during the recession. The latest IRS figures (2010) show that thousands more people are moving into Maryland than out.

Why? For the quality of life Marylanders have cultivated for decades, our abundant natural resources, our commitment to innovation, our proximity to key federal agencies ? and also because Maryland has the nation?s best public school system, ranked No. 1 by Education Week for four years running. The state also boasts an affordable public university system with gems such as University of Maryland, Baltimore County, which was ranked No. 4 in undergraduate teaching last year by U.S. News and World Report. While many states cut education spending during the recession, Maryland increased its investment in the workforce of the future by 7.4 percent per student, the third-highest increase of any state.

Today, Maryland companies make solar panel arrays that power bases in Afghanistan, produce vaccines that protect against influenza and anthrax, design athletic wear for top athletes and launch satellites that power international commerce. In a world increasingly driven by technology and innovation, Maryland will continue to invest in our people, nurture their ideas, reward their entrepreneurial spirit, celebrate their achievements and abolish obstacles to their success.

Christian S. Johansson is Maryland?s secretary of business and economic development.

Human brains develop wiring slowly, differing from chimpanzees

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Research comparing brain development in humans and our closest nonhuman primate relatives, chimpanzees, reveals how quickly myelin in the cerebral cortex grows, shedding light on the evolution of human cognitive development and the vulnerability of humans to psychiatric disorders. Myelin is the fatty insulation surrounding axon connections of the brain.

Recent research by Chet Sherwood, associate professor of anthropology in Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, along with Daniel Miller, a former GW graduate student, and other colleagues, reveals this key difference in brain development between human and chimpanzee. The findings were recently published in the September 24th edition Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

In the article, Dr. Sherwood and co-authors write that the development of myelin from birth to adulthood in humans is protracted in comparison to chimpanzees. In humans, myelin develops slowly during childhood, followed by a delayed period of maturity beyond adolescence and into early adulthood. In contrast, in chimpanzees, the development of myelin already starts at a relatively more mature level at birth and ceases development long before puberty.

?These observations indicate that a marked delay in the development schedule of the human neocortex may play an important role in the growth of connections that contribute to our species-specific cognitive abilities,? wrote Dr. Sherwood and co-authors.

The developmental timing of myelination is important because it establishes connectivity among parts of the growing brain, which is essential to higher-order cognitive functions, such as decision-making and emotional regulation. These cognitive functions are known to mature relatively late in humans, after the time of adolescence. Also, this period of persistent myelin development during early adulthood in humans is a time of particular vulnerability to neuropsychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression.
