How To Create A Successful E-mail Marketing Campaign | Internet ...

Most people have no idea how to successfully grow their online business through e-mail marketing even though it is one of the most effective ways to generate sales and customer loyalty. However, if you familiarize yourself with some of the tips that the pros use, then there is no reason why you cannot keep your customers interested in your business through simple email marketing efforts.

This article offers some tips about how to create a successful e-mail marketing campaign.

Frequency

If you send e-mails too frequently they may be regarded as ?spam? and people may remove themselves from your list.

On the other hand, if you fail to send e-mail frequently enough your subscribers may feel as if they?ve wasted their time signing up to your list. Remember your goals and audience so you can pick a happy medium for the frequency of your mailings.

SMS

In addition to using e-mail, incorporate SMS marketing into your campaign. Have customers sign up for an SMS option and send them text messages when on the go. When these two methods are used together, you have a better chance of getting more customers to sign up for your product or service.

?Above The Fold?

Think ?above the fold? when designing your messages. In newspapers, anything above the page-fold features a lot more prominently than material lower down the page. If someone has to scroll down to see your call-to-action element, it is much less likely that they will ever see it, let alone click it.

Trial Offers

A great suggestion for following up with clients is to send out a follow-up email that includes a trial offer. Include a line on your message that tells them to check it out right now. The closing postscript can include that this is an excellent bargain that they should take full advantage of.

Provide Quality Content

Every e-mail message you send out should provide your customers with good quality content that contains useful tips or information. Think of the newsletter as an opportunity to demonstrate your expertise in your field. Your customers will trust you more when they see how much you know and will be more likely to buy products or services from you.

Add A Disclaimer

When you invite your prospects to provide their email address during the sign-up process, make sure that a clear disclaimer is visible with some information about your newsletter content and frequency so they know that they will be receiving.

Write A Compelling Subject Line

The subject is one of the most important parts of your e-mail. If you do not have a subject that immediately grabs the reader?s attention, it is likely that they will not bother to read the e-mail at all. The best written e-mails can be completely worthless without a compelling subject. Make sure that all of your subjects are great!

Use Pre-Headers

Make use of pre-headers in your marketing emails. Certain e-mail clients ? the more advanced web-based ones in particular ? display a short summary for each email in the inbox. This is the pre-header. It is easy to set up. Clients generate pre-headers from the first line of text in the message. Compose your emails accordingly!

Identify Your Target Audience

When you are setting up an e-mail marketing campaign, it is pertinent to know who your target audience is. The proper research regarding your market niche will help you determine your target audience, and you can then build an effective email promoting campaign. Targeting the right customers is key to your success.

Making effective use of e-mail to promote your business can be tricky, but it gets easier as you get to know more about what you are trying to achieve. Done properly, e-mail marketing can dramatically boost your visibility and your sales.

(AP) ? A part-time student strode into the office of a longtime administrator at a downtown St. Louis business school Tuesday and shot the man in the chest, creating panic in the school before turning the gun on himself, police said.

Both men were in surgery Tuesday afternoon at Saint Louis University Hospital. Police Chief Sam Dotson said he was optimistic both would survive. Hospital officials declined Tuesday evening to comment on the men's conditions and a message left with St. Louis police was not returned.

Police did not identify either man, but Dotson said the administrator was a longtime employee in his late 40s. He said the suspect had been attending Stevens Institute of Business & Arts off and on for four years and had no history of threats or violence.

Dotson said police arrived to find a "chaotic" scene with many students running out of the five-story historic building in the downtown loft district of St. Louis. About 40 to 50 people were in the building when gunfire broke out, and police evacuated them before starting a floor-by-floor search with tactical teams and dogs.

They found the administrator, who had been shot in his fourth-floor office, near an elevator, Dotson said. Officers found the suspect in a stairwell between the third and fourth floors, he said. Police found a handgun, but a spokeswoman wasn't sure where.

The motive wasn't clear, but Dotson said the shooter apparently sought out the victim.

"This did not appear to be random," Dotson said. "It appeared to be targeted."

Britanee Jones, 24, hid under a desk while her classmates ducked into closets or ran out of the building. Her mother, Angae Lowery, raced to the school to make sure her daughter was safe.

"She sent a text message and said a gunman was in the building," Lowery said. "She saw him (the gunman) go by the classroom."

When Jones emerged from the building about an hour-and-a-half after the shooting, her mother and another relative greeted her with shrieks of joy. Jones declined interview requests, saying only that she was in a fashion management class when the shooting began.

"I'm so happy to see her come out," Lowery said. "I'm relieved. It was really frightening."

The school has about 180 students in programs including business administration, tourism and hospitality, paralegal studies, fashion, and retail and interior design.

Dotson said police arrived within one minute of getting a call about the shooting and used an "active shooter" protocol developed after a 2010 shooting spree in which a man killed four people and wounded five others at ABB Inc., a transformer manufacturing firm.

Officers followed the protocol to a tee, Dotson said, hurriedly going inside, getting everyone out, and using tactical teams and dogs to sweep the building in search of the shooter or shooters.

Several people left messages on the school's Facebook page expressing dismay that a shooting happened there, and expressing prayers for a quick recovery for the administrator. The school posted on the Facebook page that it would be closed until 8 a.m. Jan. 22.

Several messages left Tuesday with the school's telephone operator and the college's president, Cynthia Musterman, were not immediately returned.

"American Idol" returns with feuds, fame, fortune

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "American Idol" returns on Wednesday with the tantalizing promise of fame, fortune and feuds - and that's just among the celebrity panel hired to find the next pop music sensation.

Singer Mariah Carey, rapper Nicki Minaj and country artist Keith Urban make their debut as judges when the TV talent contest begins its 12th season on Fox.

"All three judges are eminently qualified. It's a good spectrum in terms of embracing hip-hop, country and pop," HitFix.com music blogger Melinda Newman said.

"What everyone is going to be looking at, sadly, is how Mariah and Nicki Minaj get along, instead of focusing on the contestants," she said.

Carey, with more than 200 million album sales, the outspoken Minaj, one of the most exciting voices in rap, and Urban are expected to revive interest in the contest. Last year average audiences dipped below 20 million, and "Idol" lost its eight-year crown as the most watched show on U.S. television to NBC's "Sunday Night Football."

The three newcomers replace departing judges Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler who quit last year after two seasons.

The new panel, rounded out by old hand record producer Randy Jackson, didn't come cheap. Carey is reported to be earning approximately $18 million for the season, Minaj about $12 million and Urban $8 million.

But industry watchers say "Idol" needs more than big names to bring in audiences at a time of cutthroat competition from talent contests like "The Voice," "The X Factor," and "America's Got Talent."

"While shaking up the show can initially provide curiosity tune in, at the end of the day, the panel needs to click with each other and with fans," Entertainment Weekly's James Hibberd said.

"'Idol' used to have the playground all to itself. After four months of 'The Voice' and ' X Factor' last fall, are audiences still going to be excited by 'Idol'?" Hibberd asked.

The new season of "Idol" was making headlines in September, when video of Carey and Minaj arguing during early auditions was leaked online.

Minaj also was reported to have threatened to shoot Carey, who said in a TV interview last week that she had hired extra security while filming the show.

FOCUS ON CONTESTANTS

In a tense media appearance last week, the two divas claimed they had put their feud behind them, attributing the fight to passionate differences of opinion about the contestants auditioning for a chance to make it through to later rounds.

Newman said it would be a shame if the fight overshadows the show's original mission of finding new talent, an achievement that could prove the biggest boost to "Idol" ratings.

"All these shows have become more about the contestants than the judges. It would be nice if 'American Idol,' as the one that started it all, got the focus back on the contestants.

"Ten years ago, people were really excited when they were voting for ('Idol' winners) Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. There needs to be a powerhouse group of contestants who really capture people's interest, and who you want to root for," Newman said.

The new judges say that's what they want too.

"When I watch these shows and someone says yes to a person who clearly doesn't deserve it, it bothers me," Minaj told TV reporters last week. "And I want to jump through the TV because I feel like, for the people who are talented, it kind of minimizes how talented they really are. So when I came on, I didn't really have a problem with saying no, because I kind of felt like we're looking for the best of the best."

Aspiring rappers - never a group that has been embraced by "Idol" producers or fans - will get short shrift.

"I definitely don't think a rapper should be in this competition ... When I got involved in the competition, I specifically said, I hope they didn't try to do that because I was on the show, because I think America loves that it's an honest singing competition," Minaj said.

"American Idol" kicks off on Wednesday on Fox with a two-hour premiere, followed by a one-hour show on Thursday. Fox is a unit of News Corp.

Dubai Music Week, Dubai Rocks and Dubai Classics announced ...

Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) and The Global Gumbo Group (G3) have marked Dubai?s 2013 calendar with an eclectic series of events targeting avid music fans in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Combining DWTC?s expertise in event services management with G3?s mission to provide opportunities for western and Middle Eastern artists in MENA, the venture will result in the launch of Dubai Music Week (DMW), the region?s first music industry tradeshow and festival, in addition to several music festivals throughout the year.

Contributing to Dubai?s pioneering position as a regional media hub, DMW is the first music industry tradeshow in MENA which brings together all the major music labels, artists and merchants to exhibit their products and launch initiatives to key industry stakeholders and consumers.

DMW is set to launch in 2013 as a public event and will be an annual tradeshow including daily conferences, networking events and workshops as well as live performances.

The collaboration between DWTC and G3 will also result in the launch of Dubai Rocks and Dubai Classics, two large scale music festivals designed to attract the Gulf?s residents and tourists.

Dubai Rocks and Dubai Classics will see highly sought international and regional artists perform over several nights in Dubai. All three events will make a significant contribution to Dubai?s annual calendar of events.

The Global Gumbo Group (G3) is a first of its kind cross-cultural music and entertainment company based out of the UAE and Los Angeles, founded by legendary music producer, Quincy Jones, in partnership with Emirati social entrepreneur Badr Jafar.

The company is launching a series of initiatives and productions with the objective of shaping the future of the music industry and live entertainment in the MENA region. It aims to do so by developing multi-media opportunities across all entertainment platforms in the region with an added objective of nurturing new Arab talent, and acquiring content from the region to introduce to the rest of the world.

?Attracting businesses, investors and tourists from all over the world, Dubai is undoubtedly the region?s business and cultural hub,? said Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO of Dubai World Trade Centre.

?We are proud to host G3?s events as they further attract music makers, talent, and top brands in the music industry to Dubai. The emirate has a well-established network of radio, television and digital media outlets that serve the region, and this new venture with Quincy Jones? and Badr Jafar?s G3 reflects Dubai?s commitment to developing the media industry and boosting cultural tourism. With our world-class venue and top tier service offerings, Dubai will further establish itself on the world map for music and live events, and we aim to attract further events by 2015,? he added.

Badr Jafar, co-founder of G3 along with Quincy Jones, added, ?I strongly believe in the social powers of arts and entertainment, and so am constantly looking to see how best to use these spheres to create positive social impact. We both believe this collaboration with DWTC will provide a cultural exchange between our region and the rest of the world, using music?s amazing power to foster a better understanding and an appreciation for our common values.?

Orbital skipper beams down beautiful views

Chris Hadfield via Twitter

By Alan Boyle

Astronaut Chris Hadfield has made a name for himself as the International Space Station's first Canadian commander, the "Singing Spaceman" and Star Trek skipper William Shatner's Twitter buddy?? but he's also one heck of a photographer.

Since his arrival at the station on Dec. 21, Hadfield has posted more than 100 pictures to his Twitter account, most of them showing beautiful views of Earth below. Between his official duties and the unofficial picture-taking sessions, how does he find time to sleep?

"Yes,?I should sleep more on station," he told one follower, "but the view from the window is like a perpetual magnet, too wondrous to ignore."

The space station's six residents all take turns behind the lens, but some astronauts take the job way more seriously than others: Notable shooters from past orbital stints include NASA's Scott Kelly,?Douglas Wheelock,?Ron Garan and?Don Pettit, as well as Japan's Soichi Noguchi and Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers. Hadfield is sure to take his place among them.

His favorite hangout is the seven-windowed Cupola observation deck, which provides an unparalleled view of Earth. His favorite camera? "We use primarily Nikon F2s and F3s, with a variety of lenses," he said on Twitter. "We even take them out on spacewalks, into the hard vacuum."

To get those awesome pictures of Earth landscapes, he brings out the Big Lens. "The big lens is Nikkor 600 mm, used with a 2-fold converter = 1200 mm," he tweeted. "Available for just US$10,300."

When you consider that Hadfield is delivering pictures that no one on Earth can, that seems like a small price to pay. Check out a few of Hadfield's recent masterpieces from outer space:

Author Sightings : Howard Andrew Jones

Posted by admin on Monday, January 7, 2013 ? 2 Comments ?

On January 15th I?ll be driving to Terre Haute to talk to some ISU creative writing students about writing and the business thereof, and then, at 6:00, I?ll be signing copies of The Bones of the Old Ones at the Terre Haute Barnes and Noble. I suppose I could sign other items as well, if you really want. For instance, if you need a signed copy of Memory of Light, or always wanted a signature on your Land of the Lost costume, I?ll be happy to help out.

From January 18th to January 20th I?ll be at ConFusion up in sunny Dearborn Michigan. I attended ConFusion for the first time last year and it?s a great convention. The staff are personable and very well-organized. There?s a strong gaming track AND a strong writing track, and the panels are intimate. Also, there are a number of movers and shakers at ConFusion with whom it?s usually hard to rub elbows at larger cons.

You can find more details at the official ConFusion site, but for the record I highly recommend it. Try it out before everyone?s in on the secret and it gets TOO big!

Here?s my panel and reading schedule. I don?t have any information yet on who my fellow panelists will be, but I?m sharing a reading with Saladin Ahmed:

Saturday????????? 12:00:00 PM? Modern Fairy Tale

Saturday????????? 1:00:00 PM? Languages Of Fantasy And Science Fiction

Saturday????????? 5:00:00 PM? Mass Autograph Session

Saturday????????? 7:00:00 PM? Please Do The Research

Sunday????????? ? 10:00:00 AM? Religion In SF/F

Sunday?????????? 11:00:00 AM? Reading: Howard Andrew Jones & Saladin Ahmed

Speaking of Saladin, he?s got an interesting world-building article over at NPR you should go check out, and speaking of talented writers, you should go read John Fultz?s latest piece (for free) over at Black Gate!

I'd like to reserve vamp two please, but I need the character sheet pmed to me because I'm on a kindle and I won$t have it done until tomorrow

10/8/47-2/24/12

Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow, but remember me in every tomorrow. Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles, I've only gone to rest a little while. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, not as I am now, but as I used to be. Because, I will remember you all and look on with a smile. Understand, in your hearts, I've only gone to rest a little while.

Yes to all of you! Also, please recheck the introduction and the rules; I just finished them off and added more detail. Nothing is drastically changed, though. C:

I hoped to start this in a week, but if we get a lot of characters we can do it much more quickly!

Yeeeeee I'm so happy that this is getting so much activity! C: I could stay up all night, but I'm going to have to sleep now. An early morning is ahoy! Don't worry, I'll check if there are any submissions in the morning, so if someone posts their sheet now you post your sheet in five hours I'll get them at the same time, and I don't like kicking people out so just take your time, my dearies!

For someone who likes such dark role-plays, I am a lighthearted person ouo I hope we will have some fun!

Oh yeah, and don't be afraid of that suuuuuper long character skelly. Like I said in the rules, quality over quantity. As much as I admire people who write ten paragraphs for every field, it is totally irksome to wade through...

Hi's. :3 Just wanted to drop in here and say how much I adore this idea. (actually have a few of my own like this). I'll definitely be trying out for one of the humans.

Er..maybe I lied. Cannot do two or three paragraphs for appearance... <3 Best of luck!

@Horseygirl: That's alright! I just wanted to stress to all that they don't have to write pages of info to be "literate" role-players. If you're finding more to say there's probably more info to say. C:

@hxcdreamer: Yay! I'm glad this has tickled your fancy.

@bandgeek: You can always give it a stab, see how it turns out. They don't have to be super long paragraphs. I just didn't want the generic "tall, blue eyes, cute" that actually tells you nothing about the character.

Also guys, I'm going to be adding the setting to the front page this afternoon. I just realized that whereas I know where we're headed, all you guys have to go off is "house in the woods". Whoops.

Double-star systems can be dangerous for exoplanets

Alien planets born in widely separated two-star systems face a grave danger of being booted into interstellar space, a new study suggests.

Exoplanets?circling a star with a far-flung stellar companion ? worlds that are part of "wide binary" systems ? are susceptible to violent and dramatic orbital disruptions, including outright ejection, the study found.

Such effects are generally limited to sprawling planetary systems with at least one distantly orbiting world, while more compact systems are relatively immune. This finding, which observational evidence supports, should help astronomers better understand the structure and evolution of alien solar systems?across the galaxy, researchers said.

"The fact that planets observed within wide binaries tend to have more eccentric (or 'excited') orbits than those around isolated stars tells us that wide binaries do often disrupt planetary systems," lead author Nathan Kaib, of Northwestern University and the University of Toronto, told SPACE.com via email. [The Strangest Alien Planets (Gallery)]

"Thus, we believe most planetary systems are extended, with outer planets orbiting at tens of AU from their host stars," Kaib added. (One AU, or astronomical unit, equals the distance from Earth to the sun ? about 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometers.)

The study was published today (Jan. 6) in the journal Nature and will be presented by Kaib at the 221st meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Long Beach, Calif., on Monday (Jan. 7).

Shifting stellar orbits?

Two-star systems occur commonly throughout our galaxy; indeed, astronomers think the Milky Way harbors about as many binary systems as single stars. Recently, astronomers have begun discovering planets in binary systems, some of them "Tatooine" worlds?with two suns in their skies, like Luke Skywalker's home planent in the "Star Wars" films.

Many double-star systems throughout the galaxy are wide binaries, in which 1,000 AU or more separate the stellar companions on average.

The distance between stars in a wide binary often changes dramatically over time, however, since their orbits around a common center of mass can be far from circular.

"The stellar orbits of wide binaries are very sensitive to disturbances from other passing stars as well as the tidal field of the?Milky Way," Kaib said in a statement. "This causes their stellar orbits to constantly change their eccentricity, their degree of circularity. If a wide binary lasts long enough, it eventually will find itself with a very high orbital eccentricity at some point in its life.?

Eccentric orbits bring the two stars quite close together from time to time, even if the wide binary has a large average separation distance. And these close encounters can wreak havoc on planetary systems, the researchers found after performing about 3,000 computer simulations.?

In one set of runs, for example, the team added a wide-binary companion to our own solar system. In nearly half of the simulations, at least one giant planet ? Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus or Neptune ? got booted out into space.

Signficant orbital disruption generally takes hundreds of millions or billions of years to manifest, Kaib and his colleagues calculated.

"Consequently, planets in these systems initially form and evolve as if they orbited an isolated star," Kaib said. "It is only much later that they begin to feel the effects of their companion star, which often times leads to disruption of the planetary system."

Shedding light on extrasolar systems

Such destabilization, which is more dramatic in wide binaries than in more tightly orbiting two-star systems, does not always take the form of planetary ejection. Often, exoplanets just get tugged from their orginal, near-circular orbits into more eccentric ones, the simulations showed.

The researchers also looked at orbital eccentricities of actual exoplanets. The team found that planets in wide binaries have more eccentric orbits than worlds that circle single stars, suggesting the computer models are on the money.

"The eccentric planetary orbits seen in these systems are essentially scars from past disruptions caused by the companion star," co-author Sean Raymond, of the University of Bordeaux and the National Center for Scientific Research in France, said in a statement.

The team's computer simulations further suggest that these disruptions generally happen only in planetary systems that extend at least 10 AU or so from the host star.

Taken together, the observational and modeling results imply that many extrasolar systems harbor distantly orbiting worlds, though such planets are tough for astronomers to detect at the moment, researchers said.

"Given that most planet-detection campaigns cannot detect planets beyond 5-10 AU from their host stars, our results provide new clues about the characteristics of planetary systems in a regime that is poorly constrained by current observations," Kaib told SPACE.com. "We believe that planets orbiting at distances of 10 AU or further from their host stars are common."

Education & Reference

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory-known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning")-holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.

At the time of Frankl's death in 1997,?Man's Search for Meaning?had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey for the Library of Congress that asked readers to name a "book that made a difference in your life" found?Man's Search for Meaning?among the ten most influential books in America.?

Beacon Press, the original English-language publisher of?Man's Search for Meaning,?is issuing this new paperback edition with a new Foreword, biographical Afterword, jacket, price, and classroom materials to reach new generations of readers.

Two-time Olympian killed after bike is struck by ... - World News

Jacques Boissinot / AP file

Burry Stander, seen here in 2010, was hailed as a "South African icon and sporting great" by Oscar Pistorius.

?

By NBC News wire services

JOHANNESBURG - One of the world's top mountain bikers died Thursday after being hit by?a minibus taxi?while training on a coastal road.

Burry Stander, 25, narrowly missed out on a medal at the London Olympics, coming in fifth in the men's cross country event. He also finished 15th at the Beijing Games.

The South African was a former under-19 and under-23 world champion.

Police said Stander was killed on Thursday while cycling alone. He died at the scene of the accident in Shelly Beach, about 75 miles southwest of Durban.

'Ultra-competitive'
"The taxi driver allegedly stopped after the accident until the arrival of the police. No arrest has been made at this stage," police said in a statement.

"I'm totally shattered," said Gideon Sam, president of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee. He called Stander "talented, ultra-competitive but at the same time extremely humble and a true gentleman."

Full international coverage from NBC News

The two-time Olympian's death prompted a flood of tributes on social media from South African athletes, politicians and celebrities. Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee Olympic runner and multiple Paralympic medalist, said on Twitter he was "utterly devastated."

"A South African icon and sporting great. RIP my friend," Pistorius wrote.

Cycling South Africa said Stander was the country's most successful mountain biker and "a true icon and sporting role model."

Stander was the second leading cyclist to be killed in a road accident in South Africa in recent years. Carla Swart died in January 2011 when she was hit by a truck while training.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Odd meteorite could be time capsule of a wetter Mars

Scientists have analyzed a meteorite found on Earth and suggest that it could come from Mars's crust at a time when the planet was still wet and volcanically active.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / January 3, 2013

This image shows a rock from Mars that landed in the Sahara. An examination of the Martian meteorite known as NWA 7034 determined it is 2.1 billion years old and is water-rich.

An unusual meteorite plucked from the Moroccan desert holds the potential to open a window on a critical period in the history of Mars, when the planet was undergoing a dramatic change from warm and wet ? conditions potentially hospitable to life ? to cold, dry, and desolate.

Unlike any Martian meteorite scientists have studied so far, the new object, tagged as NWA 7034, has a composition similar to the planet's crust. Indeed, the sample is similar to rock and soil samples seen by rovers Spirit and Curiosity ? the first time scientists have been able to link a meteorite to rocks analyzed on the surface of the red planet, according to a team from the US and China formally reporting its results in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

It is the 2 billion-year-old meteorite's volcanic origin and its apparent interactions with water and the atmosphere at or near the Martian surface that may have turned it into such an intriguing a time capsule.

"Having this sample from 2 billion years ago may give us a little bit of a glimpse of what the surface conditions were like" during a poorly understood period in Mars's history, says Carl Agee, the team's leader and director of the Institute for Meteoritics at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

The rock was formed during the early years of Mars's Amazonian epoch. The epoch is thought to have started between 3.5 and 1.8 billion years ago and was marked, among other things, by the formation of the solar system's largest volcano, Olympus Mons, as well as by volcanic activity elsewhere on the planet.

The 11-ounce meteorite's mix of minerals and its rubble-like composition speak to a violent beginning ? rising toward the surface in an explosive, Mt. St. Helens-style volcanic eruption, Dr. Agee says.

Surprisingly, the meteorite boasts some 10 times the water of other, younger Martian meteorites, although the amount is still tiny. The team initially estimated that the meteorite held up to 3,000 parts per million in water, half of which the rock accumulated after landing on Earth. Further measurements, however, showed that the rock held up to twice the water the team initially calculated. And virtually all of it was of extraterrestrial origin, Agee says.

Moreover, the measurements suggested that the meteorite's water came from at least two sources ? magma and water at or near the planet's surface. This water, perhaps melted permafrost or a surface pool, reacted with the rock while it was still too hot to handle.

NWA 7034 also hosts organic compounds known as polyciclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can have biological as well as non-biological sources.

PAHs found in other Martian meteorites had non-biological origins. The team is now examining NWA 7034's PAHs ? also non-biological ? to see if they are similar to those found in earlier Martian meteorite samples, writes Andrew Steele, an astrobiologist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, in an e-mail exchange.

Ongoing research aims to use the rock's interaction with cosmic rays to determine how long it took to reach Earth from Mars. Nor have they yet pinned down the length of time it sat in the desert before a meteorite hunter picked it up in 2011. Based on the amount of weathering the specimen displayed, Agee estimates that NWA 7034 might have landed several hundred years ago.

Colleagues are also cataloging the relative abundance of gases trapped in tiny pockets to tease out clues as to the makeup of the planet's atmosphere at the time the rock reached the surface.

?The contents of this meteorite may challenge many long held notions about Martian geology,? said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA?s Science Mission Directorate in Washington, in a statement. ?These findings also present an important reference frame for the Curiosity rover as it searches for reduced organics in the minerals exposed in the bedrock of Gale Crater.?
